<image:caption>You Prison is an interactive kiosk by Diller, Scofidio and Renfro on which users can navigate virtual prison cells. The device is a 32″ touchscreen mounted like a periscope – you grasp the knurled steel handlebars and walk around the support pole, tilting the screen up to the ceiling or down to the floor. As you move the monitor, the rendering of the virtual cell moves in step, presenting you with a virtual window keyed to the physical world. Users begin their sessions by choosing a crime from an on-screen menu and receive a cell tailored to the severity of their offense. Paul Paradiso developed the content application of the kiosk using the open source gaming engine OGRE. With an openGL card on the embedded PC, Paul’s application delivers over 100 frames per second. The experience of You Prison is flawlessly smooth and fluid both mechanically and virtually.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Leo Villareal’s Supercluster was a temporary light installation at the PS1 Contemporary Arts Center, which was under extensive renovation to its facade in 2003. The piece was a large array of LED lamp nodes that were secured to the protective mesh covering the scaffolding. These nodes were molded polycarbonate boxes that were riveted to hollow nylon webbing. The webbing served as both a conduit for the wiring and a structural attachment to the building; Villareal’s studio assembled the lamps into pre-wired strands, which were unrolled from the top of the building. These vertical straps were tied off to the scaffolding and then placed under tension using ratcheting loadbinders. These LED nodes are now used in a permanent installation of the piece at the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY, where they are installed behind a glass curtain wall on aluminum rails.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After exhibiting a large outdoor LED sculpture “Buckyball” in Madison Square Park in 2012-13, artist Leo Villareal approached Parallel Development to design and build an edition of the Buckyballs. The smaller form factor of the edition necessitated completely custom LED tubes, and Parallel also designed the structure to be made only from naked electronics. A foundation layer of structural circuit boards carries power and data across the ball, and is topped by LED boards and 3D-printed white polycarbonate diffusers. The Buckyballs are on view at Sandra Gering Inc. through January 2015.</image:caption>

<image:title>Volume (Durst)</image:title>
<image:caption>Parallel spent much of 2012 building another volumetric piece for Leo Villareal destined for 1133 6th Avenue in Manhattan. The piece was commissioned by the building’s owners to coincide with a significant lobby renovation. At 86,400 LEDs, the piece was the artist’s largest by LED count when unveiled in January 2013. The sculpture features 900 custom, mirrored stainless LED fixtures hanging in an 8 inch grid that spans 60 ft across the lobby. The challenges presented were numerous. We needed to design a canopy that could support the significant weight of the fixtures and house all the necessary electronics while disappearing above the sculpture. Furthermore, because of the density of the fixtures, they required a hanging method that would allow one person to reach 3-ft into the sculpture and disconnect a fixture one-handed. For the canopy, we settled on a railroad-like structure made of struts and rails. The struts are laser-cut steel evenly spaced down the structure, with structural steel tubing as the rails. The electrical enclosures were then easily mounted to the tubing face and wires routed down into the strut and out to the individual fixtures. Parallel developed the new LED fixture along with Zach Eveland and the artist’s studio. There are no visible fasteners along the 12 foot face of the fixture. To achieve this, the LED boards are adhered to the inside of the mirrored stainless. We designed a pneumatic jig to apply uniform pressure to the adhesive tape as part of an assembly line for the fixtures. Once running smoothly, the assembly line of applying tape, connecting and testing LED boards, setting adhesive and connecting the hanger was turning out 60 fixtures a day. Each fixture has an electrical and mechanical connection to the canopy. The mechanical connector we designed was a simple piece of bent spring-grade stainless steel. Sandwiched between two fingers, the clip can be inserted into the strut. When released, it springs open and registers by falling into smaller slots in the strut channel. Gravity holds it in place, and the spring acts as a fail-safe against fall out. Volume (Durst) is located at 1133 6th Ave in New York City.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Did we mention we work with Leo Villareal? We do. And here’s another piece out in the public that we’re glad to have been a part of. Hive was officially revealed to the public this September of 2012 as part of the long-awaited Bleecker St transfer for the New York City MTA. It’s one of the more ambitious projects undertaken by the MTA’s Arts for Transit and the first LED-based artwork for the organization. The New York City subway system presents unique challenges to any installation, artwork or not. It’s a harsh environment and we learned through the course of the project that the artwork would be subject to potential hazards such as water ingress, vibration, wind loads, steel dust accumulation, graffiti, and the wildcard: late night riders that will swing from anything within reach. Working with MTA engineers and Robert Silman Associates, we developed a robust aluminum structure clad in stainless steel to support and accent the artwork. The design went through a number of iterations for structural integrity and galvanic corrosion resistance before entering production in January 2012. It was right around this time that our Mori-Seki CNC decided to crap out on us. We quickly sourced a new Haas and borrowed a rotary table to plow through production far faster than we could have imagined. Each cluster of the installation was staged, labeled and tested prior to delivery at the site. On time. To see Hive for yourself, take the Uptown 6 from Houston and Mulberry Streets, or transfer to the Uptown 6 from the B-D-F-M at Broadway-Lafayette Streets.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cylinder - Cylinder</image:title>
<image:caption>Cylinder was produced for LED sculpture artist Leo Villareal’s first solo exhibition in 4 years. It was the second piece in a series of volumetric explorations by the artist, the first being Cube. Work began on Cylinder a mere two months before its May 4th premier at the Gering & Lopez Gallery in Midtown Manhattan. Parallel was responsible for the structural design and installation of the piece, while electrical engineer Todd Polenberg and software engineer Jason Cipriani worked out the magic. The project’s timeline included ample time at the end for the artist to program the piece, making the deadline one of the greater challenges. Similar to Cube, mirror-polish stainless steel was specified because of the way it reflects and amplifies the effect of the LEDs. But this time the LED boards would be chained together in nearly 12-foot lengths suspended from above. Parallel devised a way of encasing the LED boards that maximized the reflective surface area and made for easy assembly and maintenance. The LED strands hang from an overhead structure that defines their radial spacing and houses the electronics for the piece. This structure needed to have a low profile while also being very rigid to support the combined 1200 lb weight of the strands. The challenge was to design a short, rigid structure with 5 concentric rings that could assemble around a column. Because the piece was not a permanent installation, assembly and dis-assembly were primary considerations. Staging the piece in our shop prior to installation proved the effectiveness of the design and made for a smooth installation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ben Rubin’s San Jose Semaphore is a multimedia installation whose central feature is a high intensity LED display system that was designed, furnished and installed by Parallel. The piece is mounted behind the curtain wall of Adobe’s headquarters in San Jose and renders four large rotating discs in amber light. Each of the four discs is 10 feet in diameter and uses 6,000 one watt Luxeon LEDs mounted on aluminum circuit boards. The display system is housed in lightweight, low profile enclosures that are bolted to the mullions. Despite a heavy acid etch on the glass, the discs are visible during the daylight and can be seen from miles away. As of October 2012 the Semaphore is broadcasting a new code. <image:caption>Cube made its premier at the 2011 Armory Show in New York City and was the first in a series of volumetric explorations by artist Leo Villareal. Parallel Development executed the mechanical design and assembly of the piece. The piece is based around a 20-inch long circuit board with edge-mounted LEDs designed by Todd Polenberg and found in a number of Villareal’s prior works. The concept called for 100 of the LED boards arranged vertically in a 10 x 10 grid, creating a dense cube of 2000 LEDs, all encased in mirror finish stainless steel. The greatest challenge presented by this concept was how to make the boards removable for testing and maintenance. After a few iterations we realized the best thing to do was to start with a rigid structure of columns that the LED boards could slide in and out of from the top. Welding the stainless columns into the cap and base was not an option as the heat would cause discoloration in the material’s finish, so we jigged the structure square and used epoxy fillets to hold it together. Check out the video above to see the finished work in action.</image:caption>

His concept was to rebuild the Holmdel Horn Antenna at Bell Labs in NJ – a contraption which was used to measure cosmic background radiation that provides empirical proof of the big bang theory. Bell Labs physicists Penzias and Wilson won a Nobel prize for research done on this device in the 1960s. As the name suggests, the horn antenna’ s geometry works pretty well in reverse as speaker. Apparently the Holmdel Antenna became a popular spot for lab picnics – a computer speaker and ipod would be placed at the focal point where recording instruments used to be, beaming sound to the blanket on the lawn below its mouth. Ben’s piece plays back the recordings of this radiation, giving us a glimpse of the sonic textures of the universe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In spring 2014, Parallel Development designed and fabricated robots for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Spring exhibit: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” The exhibition was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. For one room of the exhibit, Parallel built four custom robotic boom arms with pan/tilt cameras that moved along ceiling tracks among the dresses. The robotically-controlled cameras examined the garments and projected live video details onto four large wall screens. Each robot had six axes of synchronized motion, including operation of the cameras’ manual focus rings. Software designer Jason Cipriani created the custom motion-control software, including an authoring program to allow the DS+R to control the robots’ movements and camera views. Parallel also provided programming support for robots from Universal Robots of Denmark used in a room dedicated to James’s major ball gowns. Mounted with small pico projectors, the UR robots focused a beam of light synched with animation and video explaining the structure and detail of the gowns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Aviary - Aviary</image:title>
<image:caption>Visitors to the Dubai Mall can now encounter two spiral clusters of glass poles rising up to 14 feet from the pavement. The tubes are inhabited by colored electronic pixels which create genies of light floating in their containers. The poles look like groves of giant lightsabers with their stainless handles planted in the ground. They are screens without sides, and you can walk right through them. Touch a pole, and a burst of colored light originates from your hand and expands for a second or two, accompanied by the sound of birdsong. Slide your hand up or down and you learn to throw a bolus of light which crashes either into the ground or sky and then spreads reflections to the surrounding poles. This propagation of light is accompanied by sound moving around you from pole to pole. Hold still for a few seconds and the light fills the tube like an expanding luminous gas while the sounds morph from representational to abstract. The experience of stopping to play with these poles is akin to shaking raindrops from a tree, scaring birds into flight or making ripples in the surface of a pond. The children of the iPhone generation are enthusiastic visitors, and they know just what to do. The poles provide them with a familiar interface that is shifted in scale, form and context. Designed and produced in collaboration with Howeler + Yoon Architecture, the installation is called Aviary and was completed in May 2013. It consists of two groves of poles, both arranged in tight spirals. The smaller group has 10 poles and its larger counterpart has 20. It is a reincarnation of the original concept for the Sound Grove in Washington DC, which was produced before the iPhone came along in 2006 and redefined touch sensitivity. Ubiquitous touch interfaces have conditioned people to expect immediate feedback from their electronic environments, so we knew that revisiting the idea today required an immersive experience with a continuous interactive surface, fluid video and sensors with minimal latency. It was clear from the beginning that the project would require collaboration with others beyond the core partnership of HYA and Parallel. The story of the piece and its final realization is one that depended on the involvement of a wide team of people from around the world working together. At the start of the project we hired engineer Deqing Sun, who had done capacitive touch sensing projects at NYU’s ITP and jumped right into developing prototypes and experimenting with different materials. We explored a number of surface materials but liked glass for its surface durability, compatibility with capacitive sensing and complex materiality. Early design ideas and a bench prototype used a Y shaped structural metal core clad in glass or acrylic ‘petals’, but the joints were wide and clumsy and maintaining a waterproof seal was difficult. A glass tube was the clean design solution we needed, and it was made possible with structural engineers Hauke Jungjohann and Tom Reiner of Knippers Helbig onboard. Schott made the borosilicate glass tubing and HiTech Glas lined the tubes with a clear film which keeps them intact in the event of breakage. Knippers Helbig designed a base glazing detail which uses an elastomer to support the glass in its stainless socket, so impact loads to the tube are absorbed by the flexible joint. All of the electronics were custom designed by Parallel specifically for the project. The larger poles can consume up to 300W of power and their bases are crammed with power supplies, a speaker cavity, and a multimedia control board. The controller is based on the Gumstix computer module and has circuity for LED video control, audio amplification, and wired networking. We hope to use it as open-source embedded multimedia platform for future work, and will soon release a software image for other multimedia artists to use. Inside the poles are four sided cores of color LEDs spaced 18mm apart. The poles are low resolution displays; a larger pole is about 200 pixels high by 4 pixels around. The displays are primarily linear but images can also wrap around their seamless periphery. It was a hard call, but we decided to conceal the pixels with a diffusing film lining the inside of the glass. The film blurs the pixels and lowers the contrast, but keeps the poles simple luminous surfaces without LED hotspots. The touchfilm itself presented numerous challenges. We needed a clear conductive material that is resilient enough to withstand sharp bends from handling – the classic clear material, indium tin oxide, is a brittle coating that would crack during the pole lining process. We settled on a film made by Carestream LLC that is made from silver nanowires deposited on a polyester substrate. Carestream generously offered material and technical support, but we couldn’t find anyone who would process the raw materials into the large sized films we required. So we ended up fabricating the films in house, a process that required a number of techniques we’d never used before. Alex Marshall from Howeler Yoon came down to the studio and figured it all out – registration and laser structuring, screen printing with conductive inks, oven curing, lamination and bonding the film to circuit boards. Tim Bishop had our Haas churning out parts. He applied high speed machining practices that we’d only employed on aluminum before to milling the numerous stainless components. The pole bases include a structural baseplate with a custom junction box and waterproof bulkheads to separate the speaker openings from the electronics. We picked up an old manual Okuma lathe to turn, bore and finish the base tubes. In the meantime we welded and painted the steel core and began the laborious process of integrating and testing the electronics. The finished stainless bases were shipped to Germany for bonding into the glass tubes, while the baseplates were delivered to Dubai to be set into the pavement and wired. Extra tubes were shipped to Brooklyn so we could build a test installation here in the shop, which was used to master the process of assembling and erecting the poles. Finally, the electronic cores and touchfilms were air freighted to Dubai where they met the German glass. Facing an extremely tight schedule, we brought Jason Cipriani on board to write the underlying software that controls the poles and a simulator to test the installations behavior on a single computer screen. Jason’s modular client/server architecture led to a number of diagnostic tools to help with pole production and testing, and allowed him to offload computation to a central system with little rework. Audio programmer Nick Joliat wrote scripts that playback and process the sounds of composer Erik Carlson. Jason stayed on to develop the visual content of the piece and followed us to Dubai for the installation.</image:caption>
