After exhibiting a large outdoor LED sculpture “Buckyball” in Madison Square Park in 2012-13, artist Leo Villareal approached Parallel Development to design and build an edition of the Buckyballs.

The smaller form factor of the edition necessitated completely custom LED tubes, and Parallel also designed the structure to be made only from naked electronics. A foundation layer of structural circuit boards carries power and data across the ball, and is topped by LED boards and 3D-printed white polycarbonate diffusers.

The Buckyballs are on view at Sandra Gering Inc. through January 2015.
